The story of Guild TheatreWorks began long before the curtain first rose in Brick. Originally founded in 1990 as the Brick Community Players, the organization was created by the late John D. Spahr and his daughter, Janet Lynn Spahr, whose passion for live theater helped spark a lasting tradition of community arts in the area. Janet brought with her years of theatrical experience and inspiration from the beloved Macallister Playhouse in Jackson, where she had served as one of the original producers during the early 1980s. The playhouse became a treasured gathering place for performers, dreamers, and theater lovers alike until 1984, when the building was sadly lost after being converted into office space. But while the stage itself disappeared, the spirit of creativity and community never faded. Determined to keep that theatrical magic alive, John organized a reunion of former playhouse regulars, including fellow founder Monica Vermeulen, along with local residents eager to build something special in Brick Township. What began as a small gathering of passionate volunteers quickly grew into the foundation of a new community theater family — one built on friendship, creativity, mentorship, and a love of performance. From the very beginning, the mission of the organization was about far more than putting on shows. Guild TheatreWorks was created to inspire and nurture young performers, allowing experienced actors, directors, musicians, and technicians to pass their knowledge on to the next generation. At the same time, the theater sought to bring quality entertainment, laughter, music, and storytelling to the local community. Although John passed away shortly after helping launch the company, his vision and determination remain woven into the very fabric of the organization. His belief that theater should uplift, unite, and serve others continues to guide Guild TheatreWorks to this day. His enduring motto — “Service to the Community” — remains the heart of everything we do, both onstage and off.
